Grade One sight words
The following Grade One sight words (also known as word wall words - www) are words that are commonly found in story books, poems and informational texts that are read in the classroom. They are words that we frequently use in our classroom messages, shared reading/writing activities, guided reading/writing activities and journals.
The purposes of studying these words are to help students build a sight word vocabulary and make the task of reading and comprehension easier. Students are encouraged to sound out the letters one by one (i.e. pulling apart like bubble gum and then snapping them back together quickly) until they have mastered the word.
There are 100 word wall words for Grade One students to develop and master in order to prepare themselves for the next grade. Please download the list of Dolch Sight Words.

WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN THEIR SIGHT WORDS
- Place sight words on the floor in a pathway and have your child jump onto each word and say it. Make the pathway to a couch and snuggle up and read.
- Using water and a brush "paint" the words on the sidewalk.
- Find words when you are at the grocery store, bank, restaurants, museums and newsprint just to name a few.
- Get a container filled with sand and use a pencil to write out words.
- Have a game of hangman using sight words.
- Use play dough to form letters and words.
- Use magnets on the fridge, cookie sheet or metal cookie container.
- Use blocks with letters on them.
